SPF 65

It’s finally summer time and of course we are all so excited to rush outside and soak in some much-needed Vitamin D. My first mistake of summer 2017 was lathering myself in expired sunscreen and then laying by the pool all day roasting in the sun thinking I must be getting the best tan ever. Not the case. Here’s what I learned: expired sunscreen is actually a thing and my skin totally paid for it.

Aside from the horrific burn that I was now sporting around town, I had been noticing a few sunspots creeping up on my face and body. I ran to my dermatologist asking if there was anything I could do – treatments? creams? Anything? Aside from listing off a variety of treatments that were both costly and required some downtime, she also mentioned that not all sunscreens are created equally (um. what.) Her recos – La Roche-Posay or Ombrelle.

Any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen however those more expensive brands that I was avoiding at the drug store are actually worth the extra pennies. I’m not going to start talking about ingredients and why these are stronger or better because I’m not a dermatologist and I honestly have no idea, but what I can say is after a few weeks of wearing La Roche-Posay on my face, I’ve noticed that my skin tone is looking more even and I don’t have any new sun spots.

Moral of the story is wear sunscreen, check the expiry date, and if you can, spending a few more dollars on your sunscreen will likely save you a lot of money in the future.

Purchase these brands in store at your local Shopper’s Drug Mart or online here and here.

Pro tip: Purchase the 50ml bottle to throw in your purse in case you catch yourself outside unprotected.
