The Engagement Party

When we first got engaged, we knew we wanted to celebrate with friends and family right away and with our wedding still well over a year away, we couldn’t think of a better time to celebrate than this summer.

The venue was an easy pick; we wanted a gathering with friends and family on our private island on Lake of the Woods in Northern Ontario. As is usually the case with throwing a party, our guest list quickly expanded to 130 people. This doesn’t exactly rival the 450-person guest list for the engagement party of Hannah Bronfman and Brendan Fallis but I wouldn’t necessarily consider our guest list to be intimate either.

My Mom, an expert hostess, sourced amazing local Chef, Mark Wrigley, to cater the party. The menu was a mix of local and seasonal summer favorites including traditional fried pickerel, pork ribs with blueberry bourbon barbeque sauce, roasted root vegetables and a wild rice blend. For those with a sweet tooth, chocolate covered strawberries, lavender shortbread lemon tarts and flourless chocolate cake were served for dessert.

Around 5pm in the evening, guests arrived by boat and enjoyed welcome cocktails in the evening sun. After a champagne toast, guests piled their plates high with the delicious eats and made their way down the dock to eat by the lake and take in the sunset. The setting sun was followed by impromptu keg stands on the dock and a dance party in the cabin.

The vibe of the party was exactly what we wanted – a fun and relaxing summer evening with our closest friends and family enjoying each others company in our favourite place, the lake.

Big thanks to my Mom for planning and hosting such a beautiful party. And another big thanks to all who came out to celebrate with us – it meant so much to us to have you all there.
